British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
