Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Debate
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who previously acted in defense or intelligence positions.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you should reject improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that violate the law or our national charter."
Trump's Incensed Response
The video message reportedly prompt a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership released a combined declaration denouncing the statements.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with tremendous loyalty and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The officials who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who value this country and took an vow to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "The entire nation must unite and censure the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
More Political Responses
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of public representatives."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling troops to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to casualties, it can cause confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
