Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
People have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the conditions of the plan.
A prominent delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.
The official stated the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Future management of the territory
Public Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive are released none of us will be secure."
"When we see all home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israelis desire the hostilities to end in exchange for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, notably my little child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more dead people had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the southern area, medical staff stated.
