Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has presented what is being called the most significant changes to combat unauthorized immigration "in recent history".

The proposed measures, inspired by the more rigorous system enacted by the Danish administration, makes asylum approval temporary, restricts the review procedure and proposes entry restrictions on nations that refuse repatriation.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

People granted asylum in the UK will be permitted to stay in the country temporarily, with their case evaluated biannually.

This signifies people could be sent back to their native land if it is judged "stable".

The scheme follows the practice in that European nation, where refugees get 24-month visas and must request extensions when they terminate.

Officials claims it has begun helping people to go back to Syria by choice, following the removal of the current administration.

It will now investigate mandatory repatriation to that country and other states where people have not typically been sent back to in the past few years.

Protected individuals will also need to be living in the UK for two decades before they can request permanent residence - raised from the existing five years.

At the same time, the authorities will establish a new "work and study" immigration pathway, and urge refugees to secure jobs or begin education in order to transition to this route and qualify for residency more quickly.

Only those on this employment and education pathway will be able to support family members to come to in the UK.

Human Rights Law Overhaul

Authorities also intends to terminate the system of allowing multiple appeals in refugee applications and replacing it with a comprehensive assessment where every argument must be submitted together.

A recently established review panel will be formed, manned by experienced arbitrators and supported by preliminary guidance.

To do this, the authorities will present a bill to change how the family unity rights under Clause 8 of the ECHR is applied in immigration proceedings.

Exclusively persons with immediate relatives, like minors or mothers and fathers, will be able to continue living in the UK in future.

A greater weight will be assigned to the public interest in removing international criminals and persons who arrived without authorization.

The administration will also restrict the use of Clause 3 of the European Convention, which forbids undignified handling.

Government officials claim the existing application of the law enables multiple appeals against denied protection - including violent lawbreakers having their removal prevented because their healthcare needs cannot be addressed.

The human exploitation law will be strengthened to curb last‑minute slavery accusations employed to prevent returns by mandating protection claimants to disclose all applicable facts quickly.

Ending Housing and Financial Support

Officials will revoke the legal duty to provide refugee applicants with aid, ceasing guaranteed housing and weekly pay.

Support would still be available for "individuals in poverty" but will be denied from those with work authorization who do not, and from people who violate regulations or defy removal directions.

Those who "have deliberately made themselves destitute" will also be refused assistance.

According to proposals, asylum seekers with assets will be required to assist with the expense of their accommodation.

This mirrors that country's system where protection claimants must utilize funds to cover their accommodation and authorities can take possessions at the customs.

UK government sources have ruled out seizing emotional possessions like marriage bands, but government representatives have indicated that vehicles and e-bikes could be subject to seizure.
