Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
