The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
