This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
